Four nights in pristine jungle. Three nights on a charming bohemian island. Amazing adventures. Open-air yoga with great views. This special fusion  yoga/Thai yoga massage retreat combines both the quiet serenity of the jungle with the charm and vibrancy of a Caribbean village–where you can get to know Jessie’s home village and studio! This unique retreat will offer a morning yoga session plus an afternoon Thai Yoga Massage workshop–a perfect opportunity to deepen your knowledge….great for yoga students and teachers alike.

Thai Yoga Massage combines the stretching of yoga with massage to help balance and relax body mind and soul. One partner “receives” by allowing the “giver” to move them into yoga-like postures to work with the muscles while in tension, creating a uniquely wonderful experience of relaxation and ease for both receiver and giver. This unique massage is done fully clothes, on mats and is marvelous for even beginning students.

Jessie Wigh, co-founder of Belize Yoga, certified yoga instructor, owner of RandOM Yoga Studio in Caye Caulker, Belize

In 2008, Jessie and her husband moved to Belize to start their dream of offering yoga retreats in Belize and opening a yoga studio on the little island of Caye Caulker. Jessie leads retreats in Belize and Italy, and when not on retreat, teaches six days a week at her by-donation studio. Her classes are “island-paced” vinyasa…casual, relaxed, and designed to bring emphasis to the world around you. Jessie truly feels like she is living the dream by sharing yoga and seeing how it can change the lives of retreat students.

Jessie’s retreats are spiritual, healing, and just plain fun. Having taught almost exclusively outdoors, she finds that connection to environment helps to cultivate connection within. Jessie’s retreats are very much about the WHOLE body (physical, mental, spiritual, emotional). With a focus on the chakras, each day of the retreat will focus on a different area of the body and mind. The nature of travel–changing one’s physical location–sets the stage perfectly for beginning the bigger journey.

Begin with four nights in the jungle…

At the beginning of your trip, you will stay in riverview cabins at Black Rock Lodge. Each cabin is nestled along the mountainside and allows for beautiful views of the river below and of the surrounding jungle. The cabins are private and inviting, with spacious interiors, unique detailing, two double beds and full bathroom. Relax in the hammock on your private porch, listen to the wildlife, and admire the sweeping view.

…then spend three nights on a vibrant Caribbean island.

Caye Caulker’s motto is “Go Slow” and you most certainly will. With a village size of approximately 2000 people, sand streets and no reason to hurry, you’ll soon become entranced by the island’s laid-back and friendly vibe. The only vehicles are delivery trucks, so the islanders get around via bike or golf cart. Enjoy strolling the streets popping into brightly-colored shops, or just relax on a hammock. No matter where you are, you are never more than a few steps from the sea. You will stay at Iguana Reef Inn, a beachfront boutique hotel with swimming pool, outdoor lounge/bar and spacious rooms.

Most meals are included (1 lunch and 1 dinner are on your own), beginning with dinner on arrival day. Belizean food is always deliciously homemade, and is simple and unfussy. All produce is locally grown, and while in the mountains, much is organically grown on-site at the lodge. Vegetarian and vegan options can be accommodated

Breakfasts at Black Rock Lodge will be fresh fruits, yogurt, granola, toast and jam (everything homemade!), followed by a hot item. Lunches could be veggie fajitas or chicken with rice and beans. Typical dinner menu at Black Rock Lodge is four-course and might include curried plantain soup, spinach salad with watermelon and balsamic dressing, mayan lasagna and key lime mousse.

Meals at Caye Caulker are eclectic, varied, but decidedly Belizean. Breakfast might be fresh tropical fruits, baked goods, and natural yogurt. Lunch options include watermelon-mint salad or the traditional chicken with rice and beans. Dinner might be lobster bisque, shrimp kabobs, or pan-seared grouper.

Additional alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages may be purchased.

Included in your Eco-Adventure retreat:

  • Xunantunich Mayan ruin tour
  • Caving tour to a Mayan ritual cave–choice of ATM cave or Barton Creek Cave (with ziplining)
  • Snorkeling tour to the barrier reef
  • Twice-daily yoga classes (except on cave tour day)

Complementary free-time activies:

  • Jungle hiking
  • River float

Xunantunich–Guided tour of the magnificent Mayan ruin of Xunantunich. Travel across a hand-cranked ferry to visit this 6-plaza site with wonderfully preserved stellae. Climb atop El Castillo temple (the second largest structure in all of Belize) for a sweeping view of Belize and Guatemala.

Xunantunich Mayan ruins

Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM)–To experience this amazing cave is to visit a place like no other. After a 45-minute hike in a nature preserve, you arrive at the entrance of ATM and swim or wade inside. ATM was a sacred Mayan ritual site, and still contains hundreds of astonishingly well-preserved Mayan artifacts and human skeletons, many of which have been ‘cemented’ to the cave interior with sparkling calcite.

Barton Creek Cave + Ziplining–Begin this tour by gently gliding though a Mayan ritual cave in your canoe. You’ll see lovely formations while your guide explains the history and traditions of the Mayans, and how they used caves in their spiritual practices. Finish the day with an exhilarating zip though the jungles of Belize!

Barton Creek Cave canoeing

Snorkeling the Western Hemisphere’s largest barrier reef–Belize’s barrier reef is like a living art gallery. Living among the many beautiful corals are a myriad of tropical fish–Blue Tang, Angelfish, Butterfly Fish, Parrot Fish…there are simply too many to name. Snorkelers often see elusive beauties such as spotted eagle rays, sea turtles and the magnificent Queen Triggerfish.

Morning and evening outdoor yoga classes with gorgeous views. The locations we have selected for our eco-adventure retreat fully integrate nature into yoga: open air, sweeping views, nature’s soundtrack. We hope that these sublime locations will help you take your practice to a new level.

While at Black Rock Lodge, the 600 sq. ft. yoga deck is located above rapids in the Macal River, and you will love the sound of the rushing water during practice. The deck is shaded by a high thatched palapa, making an afternoon or evening session enjoyable even on a hot day.

While on Caye Caulker, classes are held in Jessie’s open-air, third floor yoga studio, right in the heart of the village. With a sea view on three sides, you will get a panoramic view of the island, while enjoying nice breeze.

Activities available for an additional charge:

  • Guided birding, hiking or night-hiking
  • Canoeing
  • Horseback riding
  • Fishing
  • Scuba diving
