Azores Adventure Yoga Retreat
with Jessie Wigh, owner of Belize Yoga Retreats and RandOM Yoga studio
The Azores…if you haven’t heard of these islands in the Atlantic, one quick google will have you registering for this retreat! A part of Portugal, these special volcanic islands have mild weather all year long, dramatic landscape after dramatic landscape, geothermal pools, lush vegetation, plus great cheese and wine…and are relatively unknown to tourism! We invite you to join us in on São Miguel, the largest (and many say most beautiful) of the nine-island archipelago. An autonomous region of Portugal, where lush tropical vegetation overlaps with trim pastures, we will soak up the natural beauty, take great hikes, and enjoy yoga in our hotel’s 31-acre botanical garden! Our retreat will be centered in Furnas, on São Miguel island, which will allow us to walk into town and to local sights, and be within 1-1.5 hours driving of all major sights on São Miguel.

Jessie Wigh, co-founder of Belize Yoga, certified yoga instructor, owner of RandOM Yoga Studio in Caye Caulker, Belize,
Classes are taught by Jessie Wigh, co-founder of Belize Yoga Retreats and RandOM Yoga studio in Caye Caulker. Italy is a country that stole Jessie’s heart when she arrived in Florence as a university student ready to study art. With a few words of Italian and only a vague idea of how to read a map, Jessie had no idea that summer would result in a life of travel and yoga and wanderlust… Jessie began her yoga journey 13 years ago, and has loved watching her practice and teaching become influenced by two pregnancies, a move to a Caribbean island, wonderful teachers and wonderful students.
In 2008, Jessie and her husband moved to Belize to start their dream of offering yoga retreats in Belize and opening a yoga studio on the little island of Caye Caulker. Jessie leads retreats in Belize and Italy, and when not on retreat, teaches six days a week at her by-donation studio. Her classes are “island-paced” vinyasa…casual, relaxed, and designed to bring emphasis to the the world around you. Jessie truly feels like she is living the dream by sharing yoga and seeing how it can change the lives of retreat students.
Jessie’s retreats are spiritual, healing, and just plain fun. Having taught almost exclusively outdoors, she finds that connection to environment helps to cultivate connection within. Jessie’s retreats are very much about the WHOLE body (physical, mental, spiritual, emotional). With a focus on the chakras, each day of the retreat will focus on a different area of the body and mind. The nature of travel–changing one’s physical location–sets the stage perfectly for beginning the bigger journey.
We will spend 7 nights at the wonderfully-located Terra Nostra Hotel and Spa (and the top-rated hotel in all of the Azores). The hotel is located right in the center of the charming town of Furnas, and as guests we have 24/7 unlimited access to their 31-acres of botanical gardens and multiple geothermal pools (which are rich in iron, and only have a very light sulphur smell). Our location will allow us to walk to many of the other gardens, hot springs and calderas within Furnas.
Breakfasts are served at the Terra Nostra hotel after our morning yoga class, and all dinners are included in the retreat. Three lunches will be on your own. Food in the Azores focuses on simple, wholesome dishes. The (very!) best pineapples in the world are grown there, and you will simply fall in love with their Bolo Lêvedo, which is not quite a pancake and not quite bread…we can walk to the local bakery for fresh warm ones in the mornings! We’ll also sample traditional cozido, which is stew that is cooked by volcanic steam. A trip to the Azores would not be complete without sampling their excellent wine and cheese.
Included in your Azores Adventure Yoga retreat:
Complementary free-time activites:
I’ll be honest, at the time of this writing, I am still finalizing the adventures we will have on the retreat, but I can tell you that we are including a massage, a cultural group experience (most likely a cooking class), a hiking/day trip to the amazingly picturesque Sete Cidades crater lakes (see above photo–we will take that hike!), another daytrip to the beach and to a National Park with waterfalls. We will also visit the calderas (steam vents) to watch the traditional cozido stew being cooked. We will offer opportunities to be as active or relaxed as you like on our day trips–you will have opportunities to take additional hikes, kayak, bike, paddleboard, etc., or just relax and enjoy the view.
Yoga will be held throughout the Terra Nostra Botanical Gardens. The gardens are open to the public each day from 10-6, but as hotel guests, we will have early access to the gardens before many others arrive, so our morning yoga session will be in whatever lovely spot we decide to do yoga that day! Afternoon sessions might be held onsite, perhaps on the shores of a lake 🙂
